An official with the U.S. Department of Agriculture official stopped by an Austin food bank Thursday in support of Hunger Action Month.
USDA Undersecretary Kevin Concannon said that although the Capital Area Food Bank does a good job at serving the community, more help is needed.
He says about one out of six children in the Austin area have to worry about where their next meal will come from and the problem isn't unique to Central Texas.
“We shouldn't tolerate it,” Concannon said. “And we should work hard at overcoming it completely."
Concannon says he's fighting against some members of Congress who want to cut funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
He says millions of Americans, including children, rely on the food stamp program to survive.
