The University of Texas campus has now reopened following a university-wide evacuation Friday morning.

The entire campus was evacuated for several hours due to a bomb threat from a male claiming to be from al-Qaeda who said he placed bombs all over campus.

Officials say the university received a call around 8:35 a.m., and at that time, the threat was “evaluated.” A university alert went out to students and staff at 9:50 a.m.

"But we could not assure ourselves that this was not a credible threat. We couldn't assure ourselves the other way,” University President Bill Powers said during a press conference Friday. “And so we thought the prudent thing to do was clear the buildings. We did that through social media, we have sirens. I must say the buildings were cleared very expeditiously."

Officials say university activities will resume at 5 p.m. Friday, but all classes are canceled.

Powers said the university is working federal, state and local officials and have a large amount of information to indicate the campus is now safe.

"Through a variety of sources we are confident our campus is safe going forward," he said.
