Central Texas' Mexican American Community is celebrating Diez Y Seis this weekend.
The holiday marks Mexico's Independence Day.

"It's important to let everybody know that Mexico is celebrating their Independence day, the way our 4th of July is important for us,” Laura Gonzalez said. “Same thing for them."

Julius Velasquez organized one celebration being held this weekend at Fiesta Gardens in East Austin.

"My grandparents came from Mexico so I'm a second generation born American citizen," Velasquez said. “We can use that burning desire to seek equalities too that our ancestors were seeking too. There are issues right now that we're dealing with. There are social issues, like social security, healthcare, education."

Politics aside, Velasquez says it's a day for family.

"So that our children, and our future children and grandchildren will never forget the cause that our ancestors fought for," he said.
