Police locate witness in Dowtown Austin beating death

Police have found Renee Jones, a woman they say was present when 35-year-old Matt Casey was punched in the head and killed in Downtown Austin. Police have charged Preston Joe Sharpnack with manslaughter in the case.
According to an arrest affidavit, 22-year-old Sharpnack was with Jones on East Sixth Street during the early morning hours of Sept. 3 when they encountered Casey and a group of Casey’s friends.
An argument ensued, and, according police, Sharpnack punched Casey, a local architect. Casey died in the hospital seven days later.
Police said Jones is not under arrest and charges are not expected to be filed against her. She is being treated as witness as this time.
