A new parking lot at Austin-Bergstrom is tabled for now, but the airport's manager says it's critically needed.

ABIA's Executive Director says the 1,500 space parking lot is needed to handle an increase in employee parking needs.

In addition, he says the spots could be used for passengers if the airport felt that was a better purpose.

The $7 million price tag gives Council member Chris Riley reservations.

"I think it's incumbent upon us to have high expectations of our city facilities, to demonstrate best practices and creative approaches to alternative travel and other sustainability issues,” Riley said. “I don't think we've done the best we can do here."

Riley advocates bus passes for ABIA employees, but the airport's director says he's heard complaints from passengers that felt "uncomfortable" riding with airport workers.

The council will revisit the issue Oct. 18.
