On the one-year anniversary of his release from prison, Michael Morton spoke out Thursday about his story and his new mission to prevent wrongful convictions across the nation.
Morton spent nearly 25 years behind bars in Texas after he was wrongly convicted of his wife Christine’s murder in 1986.
While DNA found on a bandana at the scene ultimately cleared him of the crime, his legal team discovered testimony and other evidence which would have cleared Morton during the 1987 trial, but the prosecution never handed it over to the defense.
Now after a year of freedom, Morton is spending his days working to promote accountability for prosecutors who take short cuts.
"My goal is not fame and fortune,” he said. “There is no money involved. The motivation is to make sure what happened to me, doesn't happen to you."
The DNA found on the bandana implicated another man, Mark Alan Norwood, who has since been arrested and charged with Christine Morton’s death.
The Williamson County district attorney who initially prosecuted Morton, Ken Anderson, now faces a Court of Inquiry for suspected prosecutorial misconduct.
