Austin police released surveillance footage Friday of a downtown assault over PRIDE weekend.
Two victims suffered serious injuries, one even losing several teeth, shortly after midnight Sept. 22 at the Roppolo's Pizzeria trailer located on Fourth and Colorado streets.
The primary suspect is described to be an Asian male about six-feet tall with a medium build.
Victim Andrew Oppleman, 49, says he was waiting in line to get pizza when the suspect attacked his friend. When Oppleman tried to intervene, the attacker turned on him, punching him in the face and mouth, which is captured on the surveillance footage.
During a press conference Friday, Cpl. Anthony Hipolito said police need the public’s help in locating the suspect, as well as the whereabouts of another Asian male, also seen in the footage, who appears to be friends with the suspect.
That person is 30-year-old Jin Young Park, who was arrested the same evening as the assault for public intoxication. Police have not been able to locate him since, and say he may have moved to Colorado. Hipolito says he is a key witness and hope to find him to learn identify of the suspect.
Shortly after the incident, Oppleman told YNN he believes he was assaulted because he is gay, and the incident should be investigating as a hate crime.
Hipolito says their investigation is too preliminary to determine if the attack was a hate crime, but do intend to file aggravated assault charges if they are able to locate the suspect.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call police immediately, or Crime Stoppers at (512) 472-TIPS.
