Friday afternoon, thousands of football fans will be heading to Dallas for the Red River Shootout against Oklahoma. The annual road trip creates traffic as big as any holiday, but this year, all along the Interstate 35 corridor, drivers will find construction.

From Austin to Hillsboro, more than 66 miles of highway are under construction in nearly a dozen different projects, meaning work zone speed limits and altered lanes.

"This weekend, as with any time we have travelers on the roadway, it's all about safety," Ken Roberts with TxDOT said. "Treat a work zone just as that, an area that is a little different and something else is going on and adjust their driving accordingly."

But now drivers have more information than ever before. TxDOT has real-time traffic information posted all along the way.

It's also on the internet, but be sure to check before you get behind the wheel or when you stop for a break.

"Take a look at where you're going,” Roberts said. “Take a look at the situation between the two locations where you are, so that it's not a surprise."

Highway officials say there are three things all drivers should do.

"Eliminating the distractions within their vehicle, driving the posted speed limit and being patient," Roberts said. "It comes back to the individual driver to ensure the safety on the roadways."
