Within the next year, anyone with an internet connection will be able to take courses offered by the University of Texas.

On Monday, the U.T. System's Board of Regents unanimously voted to join edX, an online nonprofit offering free college courses to the general public.

Users can expect to find interactive laboratories, interaction with instructors, and even virtual reality learning. The so-called UTX courses will let you earn what’s called a Certificate of Mastery.

U.T. system officials say a wide range of courses will be offered.

“At the top end we're going to emphasize our health sciences, our engineering courses, our computer science courses, and many other areas of expertise,” Steven Mintz with U.T. said. “But the gateway courses will be our foundational math classes, our introductory chemistry classes—the classes that students need if they're going to move up in their majors."

UTX will launch with at least four courses to be announced at a future date.

Governor Perry has praised the move as an effort to make higher education more accessible.

Harvard and MIT founded edX in May.
