Officer shoots at driver after vehicle strikes 2 pedestrians
An Austin Police officer fired at a car after the driver hit two people in downtown Austin shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday.
Officers say a woman in a car hit two men after pulling out from where she was parked and speeding down Sixth Street.
Police chief Art Acevedo said an officer in the area yelled for the driver to stop, but the car continued. When the driver turned the car toward the officer, he fired several shots, hitting the windshield.
"This person, for unknown reasons, decided to rapidly accelerate to the extent that she left acceleration skid mark on the pavement,” Chief Acevedo said. “And not only drove toward civilian victims--and struck civilian victims--but also drove toward the officer and refused to stop until shots rang out."
The driver was taken into custody. The officer was not injured. Both of the victims hit by the driver were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
