A doctor and an educator are going head to head for an open seat in Texas Senate District 25, which stretches from Austin to San Antonio.
Dr. Donna Campbell had to fight to earn the Republican nomination. A close race sent her into a run-off with long time Senator Jeff Wentworth.
With a few weeks until Election Day, she hopes a focus on health care will earn her a first time seat in public office.
"As government continues to wedge itself between me, the physician, and you, the patient,” she said. “We are not going to be practicing by medical degree. We are going to be practicing my governmental decree."
Her Democratic opponent, John Courage, is also a newcomer to the world of politics.
"I am a teacher and I am a veteran and I have been living in that district for 41 years," he said.
Courage, a high school teacher in San Antonio, says it was cuts to education that motivated him to run.
"As an educator, my top priority is making sure that this next session fully funds public education, restores a lot of the cuts that were made and plans for growth in the future," he said.
While Courage may be considered the underdog, he hopes his deep roots in the community will give him the edge over his opponent.
Campbell, a Tea Party favorite, is running on a platform of Fiscal Responsibility and Small Government.
"I'd like to see limited government and really everyone would like to see government limited and living within its means," Dr. Cambpell said.
Election Day is Nov. 6.
