Pizza attack suspect turns himself into Travis County Jail
Lambert Borgardt, 28
Austin police have arrested Lambert Borgardt in the brutal attack at Roppolo’s Pizzeria Sept. 22.
Officers say the 28-year-old Temple resident turned himself into the Travis County Jail. Last week, APD officials announced they issued a warrant for his arrest after identifying him from surveillance footage which captured the assault at the downtown pizza stand, located at the corner of Fourth and Colorado streets.
Victim Andrew Oppleman, 49, said he was waiting in line to get pizza when Borgardt attacked his friend. When Oppleman tried to intervene, Borgardt turned on him, punching him in the face and mouth, knocking out five teeth.
Shortly after the incident, Oppleman told YNN he believes he was assaulted because he was gay. The attack occurred during PRIDE weekend downtown. Ultimately it us up to the district attorney’s office to investigate the attack as a hate crime.
Borgardt is charged with aggravated assault and assault with injury.
