Police identify driver in deadly crash with cyclist

Update-- Police have identified the driver of the Nissan as 31-year-old Stephen Gilbert.

Earlier-- The victim has been identified by Austin police as 28-year-old Cody Johnson.

Earlier -- Austin police say a 28-year-old man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle on his bicycle in East Austin early Saturday morning.

Officers say the collision happened at 12:20 a.m. on the 7200 block of East Riverside Drive. The bicyclist was traveling eastbound when he was struck from behind by a driver of the Nissan Sentra. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries.

The driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated, and his blood alcohol test results are pending.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call APD Vehicular Homicide Detectives at (512) 974-4724. The incident is Austin’s 67th traffic fatality of the year. At this time last year, there were 46 traffic fatalities.
