Families at Camp Mabry welcomed home soldiers from a one-year deployment in Afghanistan Thursday.

The soldiers are part of the 980th Engineering Battalion and worked in Afghanistan on various construction projects, like buildings and roads.

SFC Gilbert Rodriguez said that while the distance was difficult, at least technology helped him stay connected with family.

"I'm glad that we had Skype," he said. "It made it a lot easier to communicate with our families and my grandchildren. My grandson was small before I left. He wasn't walking yet until I came. Until now."

The 980th Engineering Battalion was last deployed to Iraq in 2003 in support of Iraqi Freedom.
