Formula 1 practice runs were taking place Thursday, but not on the track.

Helicopters made test “touch-and-go” landings at temporary helipads in South Austin Thursday.

Two spots were approved by City Council this month for the temporary helipads, one at South Congress and Riverside Drive and another off of MoPac Expressway and Barton Skyway.

Beginning Friday, the two spots will see almost 70 landings and take-offs, shuttling race fans to and from the Circuit of the Americas in Southeast Travis County.
