Two people are dead and more than 50 injured after three multiple vehicle pile-ups, spreading out a mile-and-a-half on Interstate 10 in Southeast Texas. Part of the interstate was shut down Thanksgiving Day.

The accident happened near Beaumont. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety at least 100 vehicles were involved. Traffic was backed up about six miles.

A deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office said fog in the area was extremely dense.

Medical officials say at least 51 people have been taken to area hospitals and at least eight are critically hurt.

As of 2:30 p.m., I-10 eastbound remained shutdown. Westbound lanes have reopened.
