An adoption agency that placed thousands of infants in new families over the years will close Dec. 31.

Officials with Marywood Children and Family Services, and its partner Catholic Charities of Central Texas, say the decision is a result of the decreasing demand for adoptions.

Thirty years ago, Marywood Adoption Agency in northeast Austin placed more than 100 children in homes each year. Last year, they only placed two. They blame the decrease on the growing number of adoption agencies as well as young mothers choosing to keep their children.

"It doesn't make sense to continue offering services that people aren't choosing to accept,” Barbra Buddle with Catholic Charities of Central Texas said. “So we want to put our time and energy and resources toward the services that people do need and are asking for, and are coming to our doors to access."

Marywood, formerly known as the Home of the Holy Infancy, began offering pregnancy support and adoption services in 1921.
