Rec center employee charged with sexually assaulting teen
Austin police have arrested an Austin Parks and Recreation employee and has charged him with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old.

Police say that 30-year-old Juan Garza Jr. met the 14-year-old victim about one year ago while he was working at the Dove Springs Recreational Center. They began to talk online just about month ago, agreeing to “hang out” on Sunday, Dec. 2.

According to police, “multiple assaults” occurred that night between 9 p.m. and midnight. Garza turned himself in to authorities and confessed three days later.

Austin police investigated the assaults and arrested Garza Friday afternoon. He’s been charged with sexual assault of a child, a second degree felony, and is being held on $15,000 bond.

Garza had worked at the Dove Springs Rec Center as a counselor, but later moved to the Dittmar Rec Center.

Police don’t suspect there were other victims, but anyone with knowledge of abuse is encouraged to call APD’s Child Abuse hotline at (512) 974-6880.
