Continuing with the above-average deadly pattern for 2012, there were two traffic fatalities Sunday in Austin.

The first occurred at 3:05 a.m. at Magin Meadow Drive and Stoneleigh Place in South Austin. Officers say a Suzuki Motorcycle was traveling southbound on Magin Meadow Drive at a high rate of speed.

The motorcycle skidded through a stop sign and into the west curb of Stoneleigh Place, according to Austin police. The driver, described as a 25-year-old Hispanic male, died of his injuries a short time later at UMC Brackenridge Hospital.

His death is Austin’s 72nd traffic fatality of 2012.

The second fatal accident occurred at 9:02 a.m. in the 12700 block of North Interstate-35.

According to Austin police, a 49 year old white male was driving a Honda motorcycle on I-35 near the Parmer Lane exit. The bike left the roadway to the right and struck a guardrail.

The rider was taken to Round Rock Hospital where he later died. His death is Austin’s 73rd traffic fatality of 2012.

At this time in 2011, there were 50 traffic fatalities.

Anyone with information regarding either of these accidents is asked to call APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit at (512) 974-5594.
