Accused cop shooter Brandon Montgomery Daniel made a court appearance Monday afternoon.
The 24-year-old former software engineer is accused of shooting and killing Austin Police Officer Jaime Pardon in April.
Defense attorneys tell YNN the capital murder suspect is showing signs of depression and has expressed remorse for taking the life of an APD officer. Attorney Brad Urettia acknowledges the facts of the case clearly show his client killed Padron, but the defense team plans to present evidence during trial aimed at sparing Daniel's life.
"This case will not come down to whether he killed the officer or not. The case will come down to whether he deserves to die for it,” Urettia said. “Whether there are circumstances and other mitigating circumstances that will warrant giving him a life sentence instead."
The next hearing takes place at the end of January. The state is seeking the death penalty.
