There's been a deadly shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut where an official says 27 people have died, including 20 children. Two children died at an area hospital.

News reports have identified the alleged gunman as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, who also died in the shooting but it is not yet known if he shot himself or was shot by officers. Sources say his mother was a teacher at the school, and was also killed as well as most of her students. The school principal and psychologist are among the Sandy Hook Staff that are dead.

Connecticut State Police say there is a secondary crime scene where another adult has been found dead. Sources have reported this may be the shooter's father.

According to the Associated Press, a law enforcement official says the suspect's older brother, 24-year-old Adam Lanza, is being held for questioning as a possible second shooter.

The gunman was carrying two guns, one of which was a .223 caliber rifle, according to the Associated Press.

Frantic parents could be seen rushing to the school to check on their children shortly after the shooting, which occurred around 9:40 a.m. One man says his 8-year-old daughter heard two big bangs, and teachers told her to get in a corner. The daughter was fine.

A woman says it was "the happiest moment'' of her life when she found her own 8-year-old daughter safe.

The 17-year-old brother of a 9-year-old girl at the school says he raced to the school, and found she was OK. He says his sister heard a scream come over the intercom at one point. The teen says teachers were shaking and crying as they came out of the building.

The school superintendent's office in Newtown, about 60 miles northeast of New York City, says the district locked down all of the schools in the town. Schools in neighboring communities were also locked down.

The White House says President Barack Obama was notified of the shooting.

Statement from White House Press Secretary Jay Carney:

"The president as a father and I as a father certainly..feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected," Carney said at another point in his daily briefing. The White House will "do everything we can to support state and local law enforcement, to support those who are enduring what appears to be a very tragic event."

YNN's Jess Mitchell grew up near the scene of the shooting. She reports in the video below.
