The Austin Police Department helped kids get in the holiday spirit with some shopping today.

About 50 children from two elementary schools received $50 to spend on gifts. For third grader Kameron, however, the money wasn’t to spend on himself.

"I got my mom a picture frame and I got my sister a Barbie doll," he said.

Amigos de Azul has been sponsoring this event for about eight years and already helped over 1,000 kids.

The day is meant to not only help the kids, but also to show them that police officers aren't scary.

The great thing about the day is that the police officers learn something about the kids too.

“Christmas is more about giving. It's not about you know what you get,” Andreana Washington Wesley with APD said. “He already knows what it's about that it is better to give than receive.

After the kids finished shopping, they got a big buffet lunch at CiCi's pizza.
