"I never had a Zombie on the ranch before," Rusty Edwards said.

Those "Zombies" took over Rusty's Walnut Creek Ranch Saturday for the Run For Your Lives race.

"Most of the animals it doesn't seem to bother, but we had to move some of them out of the way because they get a little bit nervous about it," Edwards said.

Ten-thousand people wanted to know what the apocalypse felt like--they let almost as many zombies chase them through a 5K obstacle course.

People paid to run, but the also paid to be the Zombies. Run for your lives brought in a production crew to do the make-up.

Run for Your Lives started in 2011. This is the 13th and last race of the year.

"Oh I think it's great, I think it beats the cattle business," Edwards said.

Great for a day, but at some point, Rusty Edwards and his crew will have to get right back to it.

"They look like they're leaving all muddy and wore out but smiling," he said.

After beating their wildest nightmare, the crowd left proud and a ranch full of animals was ready to go back to business as usual.

Run For Your Lives has 22 races scheduled next year. The first one is set for February in Miami.
