Several charities will be getting a big boost thanks to some University of Texas students.
The freshmen in the "Philanthropy: The Power of Giving" course gave away $100,000 to five organizations, including the Austin Children's Shelter, Glimmer of Hope and the Against Malaria Foundation.
It was no easy feat to determine which charities got the money. The students spent this past semester analyzing and debating over dozens of organizations.
"One of the things I really focused on was how to evaluate charities, and how to evaluate when charities are affective in their programming, because some charities are effective and some are not," UT Sociology Professor Pamela Paxton said.
An anonymous foundation made the initiative possible by giving several universities a $100,000 grant to run the philanthropy course.
This is the second time UT has held the class.
