Less than 24 hours after the Austin Independent School District Board voted to cancel its contract with IDEA Charter school, the nonprofit charter school operator says it remains committed to Austin.

"We'll reopen as an independent public charter beginning in September of 2013 with the same students and the same staff," Larkin Tackett with IDEA Austin said.

What is changing, however, is the campus.

Over the next few months, AISD will develop a new plan for Alan Elementary. It is currently IDEA's first campus, but its future is blank after this school year.

IDEA says it expects current students to re-enroll. The charter school is also actively recruiting new students.

"IDEA public schools is 100 percent committed to the students that are in this building right now. We're just as committed today to the students of Austin as we were last year," Tom Torkelson with IDEA Public Schools said.

IDEA leaders say they're confident AISD will be able to continue to improve east side schools, while IDEA offers an alternative for parents and students.

Several potential campuses for a new IDEA school are being considered. IDEA officials expect to make an official announcement early next year.
