At the family-friendly Austin’s New Year, the weather did seem to keep crowds away at this year's event, but that doesn't mean the party was put on hold.

Thousands still made it out to celebrate the New Year with fireworks and live music.

Local band Residual Kid was one of 20 live acts that hit the stage Monday night.

"It's a pretty cool deal,” Max Redman, Residual Kid’s 12-year-old bass player, said. "They have bands everywhere. They have fireworks, art and stuff. It's a pretty cool deal.”

Jana Britt and daughters Krista and Rachel recently moved to Central Texas.
She's pleased Austin offers this type of family-friendly event to help ring in the new year.

"This is a wonderful idea,” Britt said. “They should have this every year so families can come out and spend time with their loved ones without the alcohol and without the big parties."

The fireworks display, one of the event’s main attractions, kicked off around 10 p.m.
