Kids wake early to launch Souper Bowl of Caring

It's tough to get high school students out of bed, but a couple dozen kids woke up early Thursday to help kick off this year's Souper Bowl of Caring.
The students came to Travis High School bright and early to help sort donated goods.
"I grew up in a family where my mom had to resort to food banks because there were seven of us,” Travis High School student Jose Ramirez said. “So I guess that I have had that experience over the while and it’s what’s influenced me."
The Capital Area Food Bank works hard to serve nutritious meals to 50,000 people per week, and the drive is the food bank's largest event of the year.
"We don't want to put Cheetos and Pepsi-Cola out in the community, so we're looking for nutritious things,” Capital Area Food Bank CEO Hank Perret said. “So we ask people to give us things like canned meats, tuna or chicken, pinto beans, peanut butter."
Last year, the food drive brought in $200,000 and 900,000 of food, enough for 1.2 million meals. The goal this year is to collect enough cash and food to provide 1.3 million meals.
"The amount of food that comes into the food bank kind of ebbs throughout the year, in the summertime the shelves are a bit empty, now its overflowing,” Perret said. “I got nine trailers on my lot full of food. I need folks to come out and help us sort that."
