A man wanted on a felony warrant was killed Friday after he crashed his car into a Northeast Austin home.
According to police, the man was driving faster than the speed limit on Northeast Drive when he spotted a police officer nearby.
A police spokesperson said the driver then sped up, likely fearing he’d be pulled over, and lost control of his vehicle while turning onto a nearby road.
His car struck a retaining wall, flipped and slid into a nearby house. A woman inside inside the house was not hurt.
"We're very, very fortunate,” Sgt. Greg White with the Austin Police Department said. “There's children walking home from school, so we're very, very fortunate no one was injured."
The Red Cross is helping the resident because the home was damaged extensively.
Police have not identified the driver.
This is Austin's fifth traffic fatality of the year.
