According to police, the minivan driven by Gomez crashed into a tree and a light pole at the intersection of Beaver and Georgian drives at a high rate of speed earlier this month.

Gomez was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead on Jan. 28.

The passenger of the car was also taken to UMCB, but is expected to survive.

This is Austin’s eighth traffic fatality of 2013. As of this time last year, there were five traffic deaths.
