Texas State University's Nursing Program received a $2 million gift from the St. David's Foundation this week to start a new master's program.
The new program is designed to meet the high demand for nurse practitioners in the state. Nurse practitioners can do many of the same things as primary care physicians.
School officials say nurse practitioners could help provide healthcare to thousands of Central Texans.
"We wanted to help meet the need in Texas for primary care providers and family nurse practitioners can really fill that role nicely,” Dr. Marla Erbin-Roeseman, director of the nursing program, said. “They can work as part of the team with the physician and be that mid-level provider."
The Master of Science in nursing will be a 21-month, five-semester program. More than three dozen students are projected to graduate when the Master's program is in place.
School officials plan to add more degrees to the program in the future.
