Unable to handle the almost 900,000 emails that TxDOT sends and receives every single day, the department recently issued a request for proposals, which would allow a technology company to take over technology services for the department.

The state said in the request that any company wishing to bid on the contract must have done at least $1 billion in business last year. Colin Pope, editor for the Austin Business Journal, said experts say that this eliminates all but about 10 to 12 companies.

It’s unknown how much the contract will be valued at because the businesses will tell the state what they'll charge for their services.
