A man was killed in a hit-and-run wreck along the service road of Interstate 35 in South Austin early Friday morning.

Police said they received a report of a dead body on the side of the service road between William Cannon Drive and Slaughter Lane just before 4 a.m.

Detectives said they have not determined if the man was in the road or on the grass alongside the highway when he was struck.

Police did note that stretch of road is poorly lit during that time of the night.

Investigators are looking for any information which may help them find the driver involved.

“When you hit somebody, do the right thing and stop. You're compounding the issue by leaving the scene,” Cpl. Anthony Hipolito said. “Stay and do the responsible thing and wait for police and call 911. That way, whoever you hit gets the help they need."

The number to the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit is (512) 974-5789.

The name of the victim has not been released.
