Reaching speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, it wasn’t your average go-karts zooming the streets of downtown Lockhart Sunday.
More than 100 drivers from across the U.S. visited the Caldwell County town this weekend for the Texas Lone Star Grand Prix.
The drivers raced on a new course which brought them through the town's historic district. It was the first time Lockhart played host to the event.
"I love street racing. I think it's really fun,” driver Diego Duez said. “This track in particular is very fast. I just love to race on such a special track that hasn't been raced before."
Despite the not-so-average course, 18-year-old driver Sabré Cook from Colorado loved the experience.
"The courthouse is beautiful. I love racing around that. So I think it's a cool scenery and just a cool setting to race around," she said. "It is definitely unique to come and race here. We don't have too many street races during the year. Usually we're at a paved track that's a designated race area."
Many of the locals were excited to be a host city for the first time.
"It's really awesome,” Lockhart resident Linda Barron said. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience for anybody, and for it being here in Lockhart, you know it's good for our economy."
Even Lockhart Police Officer John Groescher got into the racing spirit Sunday—he used his traffic radar to see how fast the go-karts were going.
"So far most of them are going between 78 and 80,” he said.
Sunday was the last day for the races, but if you couldn't make it out next this year, it will happen again next year. The City of Lockhart has a three-year contract with the coordinators behind the race.
