The Public Safety Commission wants more oversight for The Austin Regional Intelligence Center, or ARIC, which is the information gathering and sharing program run by the Austin Police Department.
The program brings together the resources of 10 law enforcement agencies. The information is gathered during investigations and reports from undercover officers.
ARIC often deals with sensitive information about criminal activity. The program is accountable to an executive board, but some people say that's not enough.
Monday evening, citizens told the commission they're afraid the agency violates people's right to privacy.
"Our privacy policy continues to this day to be a national model, so if some people may think, that APD violated that privacy policy but I am here to assure you that that did not happen," Chief of Staff David Carter with the Austin Police Department said.
The commission plans to advise city council to fill the vacant seat on ARIC's Executive Board. Commissioners say they also plan to continue the discussion about the oversight of the center.
