Friday night’s headline act, The Flaming Lips, had a small, but dedicated group who arrived early and waited all day to hear their favorite band.
They beat the crowd that later packed into Auditorium Shores which is bigger this year to accommodate more people.
Austin police said 8,000 to 9,000 people turned out Thursday, while an estimated 15,000 arrived for Friday night’s lineup.
"They're the greatest man. Honestly, these guys have been doing this for 30 years now and they are still doing it,” said Flaming Lips fan Grant Paul.
"Wrist bands are too expensive for me as a college student, so it’s kind of like free shows are what you go to, and so I am really excited that Flaming Lips decided to do this,” said Shelby Isbell, another fan.
The music portion of SXSW continues all day Saturday with a variety of acts performing free shows at Auditorium Shores.
