The Austin Fire Department reached out to 40 area teens on Saturday afternoon to show them what it takes to be an Austin firefighter.
At the Pass The Torch academy, the young men and women tested their skills and got some hands-on experience with veterans of the department.
The program is about preparing for a new generation of firefighters.
"If a person doesn't know about the opportunity, it's really on the department's shoulders to reach out," said Darren Hyson of the Austin Fire Department.
Activities for the day included tower and ladder climbs, fire extinguisher training and search and rescue.
