The congregation of Austin Vineyard Church spent a few hours Saturday giving people some relief from the rising cost of gas.
They camped out at a Texaco gas station in Northwest Austin and paid 50 cents for each gallon pumped.
Church leaders say the "gas buy-down" isn't just a way for them to give back to the community, it's a way for members to get out into the world.
"A lot of the time, Christians get stuck in the church. We get in our four walls and we don't get out, and we're supposed to get out,” said Jeff McBride, youth pastor at Austin Vineyard Church. “So one of the things that we love about these events is that we get out of the church. It's not about people coming to us, we're going out to them."
Church volunteers also washed the windows of vehicles they helped fill up.
The money for the event came from the church's kindness outreach program. For more on the church, visit austinvineyard.org.
