Abduction attempt prompts awareness

By: Candace Byers

Monday night a 21-year-old San Marcos woman panicked when a man grabbed her, and then she said he tried to put her in the trunk of his car.

A delivery truck drove by, distracting the men, and freeing the woman.

"Thank God for that delivery truck," said Jayne Ponce, the woman's mother. "We still don't know who it was. He probably doesn't even know that he saw anything, but because of that truck she was able to get away from them."

A few months ago, Rachel Cooke of Georgetown disappeared without a trace. Ponce said her daughter could have been in the same position.

"I think that, that could have been my daughter because no one would have seen anything. Her car just would have been found behind the mall," said Ponce.

San Marcos Prime Outlets employees park behind the mall. It is well lit, there is on-site contracted security and the San Marcos Police Department devotes a police officer to the property.

No prior attempted abductions have been reported at the outlet mall, but management advises people to always be on guard.

"This is the number three tourist attraction in the state of Texas, and we take security seriously here, you know," said Sr. General Manager Ted Omohundro of Prime Outlets. "It's a great place for people to come and shop, and we want to make sure that they have a good shopping experience."

Omohundro said customers and employees can request an escort to their vehicles.

"It's no different here than anywhere else," he said. "You want to make sure to keep aware of what's going on around you."

Suspect description

The 21-year-old woman wishes to remain anonymous. She did give police a description of one of the men involved.

He is described as a Hispanic man, about 5' 5" tall and weighs about 140 pounds. He has thick, wavy hair and sideburns.

He and the other man believed to be involved were driving a red or maroon small sports car, possibly a Mazda 626.

If you have any information you are asked to contact the San Marcos Police Department at (512) 453-2300.
