Austin police are investigating a murder in North Austin.

Officers found 30-year-old Mel Cotton dead in her home at the Woodland Heights Apartments.

Her 5-year-old son was injured in the attack. He was taken to Brackenridge Hospital.

"We did have a resident, a nearby resident, who told us they believe there was a disturbance inside the apartment this morning, early. Exactly what time, we haven't pinpointed at this point," said Lt. Kevin Buchman of the Austin Police Department.

Police said Cotton was stabbed, but they're waiting on autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death.
