Fox, Perry have much to discuss

By: Heather Maze

President Vicente Fox and Gov. Rick Perry will have less than 24 hours to discuss many topics.

The Texas Governor will most likely apply pressure on the subject of water and the obligations of a 1944 treaty.

Just two months ago Perry suggested cutting off Mexico's water supply from the Colorado River.

"I don't think that is particularly what we'd like to do, but if that is what it takes to get Mexico to live up to their treaty obligations -- then I would favor it,” Perry said.

Mexican Consulate General Javier Alejo said the Mexican government is willing to work with the United States on a compromise.

Right now though, the two sides just don't agree.

"Of course, some of the problems have emerged from that -- the climate has changed,” Alejo said.

And the times have changed since the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Previously, Fox started at the top with the Bush administration working on immigration issues.

Now Fox is reaching out to governors in the border states of New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.

"It involves hundreds of thousands and millions of people. And we have to deal with that in order to discuss possible approaches in common in order to find common solutions and better approaches for handling these gigantic phenomenon of workers migration between one country and the other,” Alejo.

Better solutions for migrant workers would benefit both countries.

The United States and Mexico are sure to have different opinions but are trying to work together.
