Central Texas faces a number of different potential forms of severe weather, but none are as deadly as flash flooding.

Deaths in flash floods most commonly happen when a driver attempts to cross a flooded road in his or her car. With about 100 low-water crossings throughout the city, Austin drivers are particularly vulnerable.

The best way to stay safe in a flash flood is to follow the simple four-word instruction, “Turn around, don’t drown.”

“We’ve seen, with the recent storms, that play out again and again. There was rescues in Williamson County where families were swept into the water,” Austin Fire Battalion Chief Palmer Buck said. “It doesn’t have to be during the height of the storm, it can be afterwards.
