Web Exclusive: This year's exceptional drought continues to take a toll on all forms of life, including the all-important makers of shade.

Texas trees are suffering in the extreme dry conditions. So where Mother Nature lets off, it’s up to us to pick up the slack.

Supplemental watering has become a requirement in order to keep some trees alive.

In an extended interview with the City of Austin's arborist, Michael Embesi, YNN's Burton Fitzsimmons explores how to identify and properly water the trees in your yard.

Embesi touches on the importance of trees and the urban forest. He also offers signs you can use to identify if your trees need help.

The basic rules of thumb include:

1. Water under the outer half of the canopy
2. Soak the soil a good 4 to 5 inches deep
3. Water every few weeks while extreme conditions continue
