Legendary Longhorns football coach Darrell K Royal has died at the age of 88.
Royal served as the Longhorn's coach from 1957 to 1976, and the stadium where the Longhorns play their home games was renamed in his honor in 1996.
Royal was battling Alzheimer's disease.
Bucky Godbolt, a former runningback coach and host of the “Buck on Sports” radio show knew Royal personally. He shed more light on Royal's legendary status outside of football Wednesday morning.
“He has done so much for this community,” he said. “It’s not so much wins or losses, and those are great, but they were continuing to still do things in the community, stuff you didn’t see,” he said.
Royal was inducted into the college football hall-of-fame in 1983.
The Longhorns take on the Iowa State Cyclones at home Saturday morning--in the stadium named after Royal.
