Austin music-centric reputation is not sparing its record stores from tough times.

After 12 years in business, Cheapo Records in Downtown Austin is closing its doors for good on Monday, but store regulars kept the shop busy this weekend.

Store employee William Logan says the store rang up almost $12,000 on Saturday. He said many customers have shared stories about the good old days.

"Just like, 'Oh I remember when I found this out of print punk album here in 2001’ or something,” Logan said. “The regulars come in every single weekend just to give support."

Customers say Cheapo’s good prices and personal service set it apart.

"The prices, the selection, that's really the key, they've just got a good variety of everything," Albert Puga said. "The prices, the selection, that's really the key. “They've just got a good variety of everything."

But in this day and age, the Internet has changed everything. Combine that with the fact that Cheapo is stationed on a large chunk of prime real estate at 10th Street and North Lamar Boulevard.

Logan said that while time is up for the store, they aren’t ruling out the possibility of opening a new store somewhere else in the city.
