The community continues to come together to help last week's fire victims.

Half a dozen of those who lost nearly everything in last week's apartment fire in Northwest Austin worked at the Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek location.

On Sunday, theater managers decided to help the victims get back on their feet.

What started as a "pass the hat" money collection among co-workers quickly turned into a full-blown event. Proceeds from a quote-along for the movie Elf are going straight to those who lost their homes.

Also, a silent auction was held. Items sold included original Star Wars and Lords of the Rings posters, signed film memorabilia, Drafthouse screens, and gift certificates.

The employees who lost their homes are getting to see the generosity first hand.

"Some of them came in, they lost their homes two days ago they're working their shift tonight, and they're just great,” Amy Averett, director of private and community events, said. “They've been really appreciative and a little overwhelmed that so many came out to support them and their neighbors and they're excited about it."

A Drafthouse spokesperson estimated around $15,000 was collected Sunday. If you'd still like to donate to this relief fund, you can go to AustinDisasterReliefNetwork.org.
