A Waco man is hospitalized after being shot by Waco police officers responding to a domestic violence call.

Police said they were called to the house around 11 a.m. by neighbors who said they could hear a man and a woman arguing loudly outside the home.

When they arrived, officers spoke to woman who said the man had gone inside.

“Once inside the home, the male individual appeared to be armed," Sgt. Patrick Swanton said.

It's unclear what weapon the man had, but an unidentified officer shot him in the upper torso.

"It appears the officers did what they were trained to do and used deadly force against a perceived threat," Sgt. Swanton said.

While police officers face dangerous situations every day, they're especially wary of domestic violence.

"Domestic violence calls are always dangerous. You never know what you're going to face. You're in somebody else's element," Sgt. Swanton said. "You don't know what kind of weapons that are in there, and there are always weapons—whether it be a knife, a fork, a table leg, a gun, whatever."

The wounded suspect, whose name hasn't been released, was taken to a local hospital. Police say he was conscious when the ambulance arrived, though they did not describe his condition.

The two officers involved will be placed on administrative leave until an investigation is complete.
