One of Central Texas' most recognizable courthouses will be getting a facelift in just a matter of days.

While Lockhart is most famous for its barbecue joints, Caldwell County’s nearly 120-year-old courthouse gets plenty of attention on its own.

"We probably get 100 tourists a day that stop outside, take pictures and come and look at the old courtroom," Judge Tom Bonn said.

But it's been more than a decade since the building has received some TLC. Up on the roof, it's easy to see places where the paint has begun to peel, leaving the building susceptible to decay and deterioration.

Pigeons and other birds, pollution and age are all working against the old building.

On Monday, county commissioners voted to spend close to $500,000 to give the courthouse a fresh look. Wood around the windows will be repaired or replaced. The roof's decorative metal work will be protected and entire building will be cleaned.

"It'll restore it back to its original shape as far as the texture of the wood, the paint and remove the mildew and mold off the stone,” Judge Bonn said.

Work on the courthouse is expected to take 120 days. During that time the building will be surrounded with scaffolding.
