Update--Crews have finished cleaning up after an overnight wreck which involved two 18-wheelers and all lanes of Interstate 35 have been reopened.
Earlier-- Morning commuters were stuck in a bit of a mess Friday morning when southbound Interstate-35 shut down from Riverside to Woodland due to an overnight wreck involving two 18-wheelers.
The wreck happened on I-35 south lanes at Riverside Drive at about 11:30 p.m., and all southbound lanes were closed through the night.
According to police, one of the trucks jack-knifed and flipped on its side. No one was injured.
At least one of the semis was carrying auto batteries that spilled onto the road.
"The insurance for that company called in a special Hazmat team to come and off-load the batteries,” Cpl. Chad Martinka with the Austin Police Department said. “What they are having to do is take each battery one by one and inspect it and make sure it's not leaking or anything, and then off-load it off the trailer."
Interstate-35 southbound lanes could be closed late through the morning as crews continue to clean the area.
