The Austin City Council has already approved hundreds of more apartments for the Steiner Ranch development and could approve 180 duplex homes during Thursday’s meeting. However, some Steiner Ranch dwellers say the expansion is a safety concern and have organized a petition against the developments.

A Travis County Grand Jury ruled Tuesday that APD Officer Steven Peña will not face charges in the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Gilbert Vallejo. Last May, Peña was one of several officers who responded to reports of shots fired at an apartment door on Burton Drive. The grand jury heard from witnesses who said Vallejo was shooting and trying to kick in the door of the apartment where his former girlfriend lived.
