By a margin of only a few thousand votes, Gerald Daugherty is back on the Travis County Commissioners Court, defeating Karen Huber who ousted him in the last election.
Daugherty says for the people who live in Precinct 3, which covers nearly all of western Travis County, traffic is a daily challenge.
"The number one issue across Austin and Travis County is traffic. It is the one thing that's challenging all of our lives," he said.
Daugherty credits his support of the Highway 45 southwest extension as the difference in this election, saying voters were shocked when Commissioner Huber opposed it.
"They feel like that they have really been wronged. And I feel like the people up and down Brodie Lane have been wronged," he said.
While Daugherty is bullish on highway construction, Daugherty is still concerned about county spending.
"There were a lot of bonds, a lot of things passed tonight that are going to cost this community a lot of money,” Daugherty said. “But, you know what? That's the reason you have votes."
After a long campaign and hard-won victory, Daugherty says he's ready to get back to work.
"I look forward to getting back and rolling up my sleeves and just being a hard-working elected official," he said.
